Of Blizzards and Beer

mahars_frontIn preparing for the coming snow storm that is supposed to cut a swide swath across the middle and eastern parts of this great nation, I decided that the most prudent course of action was a post-work trip to Mahar’s this evening. If Mother Nature plans on making things difficult, well then, by gum, we’ll just cut her off at the pass. We (not the royal we in this case, there were two of us) sampled mugs of each of these beauties, at least two of which were new to me:

Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted
(English Style IPA) – This Scottish entry was solid enough, but hardly as bitter and twisted as the name would seem to imply. Maybe we’re just spoiled by American-style IPA’s. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Arcadia Cocoa Loco – Nicely chocolatey, if a little more subdued than I expected. Mahar’s serves their drafts surprisingly cold, and I’d like to get a couple more cracks at this one. Seems ideal for a pending storm.


Rogue Hazelnut Brown Nectar
– A lot more nut than I expected! I just had to look it up, and apparently Rogue really uses hazelnut nectar in the recipe. They also give a shout out to the home brewer whose concoction inspired this beauty. Not an all-nighter, but well worth a glass. Very interesting.
