Bail Out With Your Ale Out

The Democrat and Chronicle — Rochester, New York’s fishwrap of record — had an article this morning about the beer industry’s effect on the local economy in the state of New York, and Rochester in particular.

Here are the stats noted in the article:

  • The beer industry contributed 60,000 jobs and $1.8 billion into the New York State economy in 2008.
  • Beer generated $2.1 billion in taxes.
  • New York State has 81 brewing establishments, 230 distributors and 36,000 retailers.
  • About 17,000 people work for brewers, 6,300 work in distribution, and 52,000 in selling beer.
  • In the U.S. in 2008, the beer industry accounted for one million jobs, $28 billion in wages, and an overall economic impact of $86 billion. That’s billion with a “B.”

So keep drinking, your nation’s economy depends on it!
